Branding For Entrepreneurs

What’s a brand?

A brand is the first thing someone thinks when they hear your company's name. Those thoughts are important ones, because it is often how that person views and feels about your business and whether or not they will engage or consume your brand's products or services.

A brand exists whether or not you want it to, so your brand must be created and curated by you or it is done so by public opinion and online influences. Each piece of marketing collateral communicates your brand's message to your target audience on all platforms and mediums.

Branding Process

  1. Brand Audit & Informational Interview

The branding process starts with an audit of your brand to determine the current state of your brand. Next, you’ll either be interviewed by a marketing agency for an informational interview or conduct extensive research on your brand yourself.

  2. Brand Strategy & Marketing Plan

Once you have conducted the brand audit and informational interview, you’ll have the necessary research to develop a long-term brand strategy. Then, you’ll create a yearly marketing plan by each quarter.

  3. Brand Elements

It’s important to make sure all of your brand elements are created, developed and in align with your brand. From your logo to color palette to your bio to your website, it all needs to be cohesive and seamlessly integrated under the umbrella of your brand.

  4. Brand Photoshoot

A brand photoshoot or creative photoshoot will give you a solid foundation to launch your brand, rebrand or give you plenty of content to batch content. A brand photoshoot may have a primary focus on you, with staged scenes throughout your workday that help your audience visualize your expertise. However, if you have a lifestyle brand where you are not the primary focus of the brand, it may be best to do a creative photoshoot. A creative photoshoot is a photoshoot where you are depicting your brand and its values through staged and possibly organic scenes. I

  5. Content Creation

Good thing you just did a brand photoshoot because the never-ending cycle of content creation is demanding of consistent, high-quality or on-trend posts. You’ll want to batch your content as much as you can and follow your brand strategy and marketing plan when applicable. In order to grow, you must play by social media algorithms and to your desired audience.

Entrepreneur Branding

  • Follow Branding Process

It’s important to follow the branding process to set up a solid foundation for your brand. A solid foundation for your brand will benefit you for the life of your brand.

  • Batch Content

When you can, batch your content. This could mean scheduling one to two days for a photoshoot each month or one to two days to gather your scheduled out content for the month. You will create all of your visuals (multiple scenes and outfits) within these days. From that point, the process is up to you. If you’d like to write out all of your social media captions in a couple of days and use a social media scheduler app to post for you or if you’d like to write your captions the day of the post as long as the actual content is planned out for the week or month. Batching content requires time and energy up-front but it can save you from the daily or weekly grind of social media content creation.

  • Social Media & Website Management

Your website is your brand’s heartbeat. Your social media is your brand’s water. It’s hard to build, develop and maintain a personal brand without a great website. Also, in order for your brand to grow, you’ll need to utilize social media to build your credibility and your community.

  • Marketing Campaigns

Without branding, marketing doesn’t work so it’s important to set your brand up the right way in order to capitalize on running a successful marketing campaign. Get creative and break through the noise with a strategic marketing plan that is in align with your brand. And then do it again.

  • Collaborate with Brands & Entrepreneurs

Just like IRL, it is important to build and nurture a community, so it is online for your brand. Collaborating with other brands and entrepreneurs not only allows you to be creative in the partnership to best reach their following, but it allows you to hopefully make a meaningful business connection. This is a great strategy for growing brand.

  • Influencer Marketing

I don’t think anyone is questioning the power of influencer marketing anymore. No question, it can help catapult and shape your brand to new audiences. It’s important to find the right influencer to collaborate or compensate for your business and your brand. This could mean doing extensive research upfront on potential influencers that will align with your brand, creating an influencer and brand ambassador program for your company, and running a marketing campaign to find influencers or pitch to select influencers. Once again, a lot of work upfront, but the payoff is worth it. Make it your goal to create long-term partnerships with influencers as it will benefit your brand.

  • Cultivate Personal Brand & Business Brand

It’s important to point out that there are two simultaneous brands you need to create, develop and grow: your personal brand and your business or company brand. Each brand requires attention.

Branding Tips For Entrepreneurs

  • Be Authentic, Not Perfect

  • Deliver Consistent Brand Message

  • Market Personal Brand & Business Brand

  • Collaborate & Partner with Influencers, Brands & Entrepreneurs

SHOUTOUT COLORADO: Meet Allison Gappa | Marketing Director

Allison Gappa Marketing Director
We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Gappa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?I believe there is art and creativity in every career. While I was a sports broadcaster for FOX Sports, I expressed my creativity through storytelling and my craft became an art. As a marketer, I can find art and bring out immense creativity in every phase and facet of marketing, branding and media. I embrace the opportunity to collaborate with other artists and professionals and enjoy the creative process of making something great.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career started when I was in college when I got hired as a sports reporter for a local station in Oklahoma City my junior year after interning in the sports department. A college athlete and compelling storyteller, sports broadcasting was a natural fit. As a senior in college, I had the opportunity to intern in the broadcasting department for the Oklahoma City Thunder and was later hired by the team as a production assistant. When I graduated, I started working for SoonerVision, the University of Oklahoma’s multi-platform network on FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX Sports Southwest as a host, feature reporter, producer and sideline reporter. In the summer, I was the in-game host for the Oklahoma City Redhawks, Triple-A affiliate for the Houston Astros. After working for SoonerVision for two years, I accepted a position as the first full-time, in-house sports reporter for Oklahoma State University on FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX Sports Southwest. I was a feature reporter, sideline reporter, producer and editor for all coaches shows, live in-game host, and sports broadcaster for all sports at OSU. In addition to my full-time job as a sports broadcaster for OSU, I freelanced for CBS Sports as a sideline reporter and as the pre-game host for OSU football games on local television.

After working for FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX Sports Southwest as Oklahoma State’s sports broadcaster, I transitioned into marketing. As much as I love sports broadcasting, I have an equal passion for marketing and branding for professionals and businesses. I founded ALLYEXIA, a marketing and branding agency with an array of clients in different industries. I had numerous clients in the real estate industry, where ALLYEXIA’s branding, marketing and media expertise greatly benefited their overall brand and production. I developed a niche in real estate marketing due to that success and was offered a position as the National Marketing Director for VIP Real Estate, a luxury, boutique real estate brokerage in Denver, Colorado. I was excited about the opportunity and accepted the position. I thoroughly enjoy working for VIP Real Estate and love living in the Mile High City.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Denver has so much to offer! I love going to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre whether it’s for a concert, hiking in the snow or running the stadium during the summer. As a sports girl, you can’t beat a summer night at Coors Field watching the Colorado Rockies play ball with friends or catching a Denver Broncos game. I love checking out new art exhibits at the Denver Art Museum or other art galleries or exhibits like Meow Wolf or the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit in Denver. I love going to the Denver Botanical Garden in the winter! There are so many cool places to check out in Denver’s RiNo District including The Beacon, an artist-created dance bar, great for a Friday night date. 16th Street Mall is a fun place to take friends or family from out-of-state to experience plus the shopping and restaurants are great. LoDo is another cool district to check out with trendy clubs, restaurants and art galleries with Coors Field, the Pepsi Center and Denver Union Station all nearby. Cherry Creek is an amazing district for high-end shopping at local boutiques, great restaurants, casual cafes and chic cocktail lounges. I love the Clayton Members Club & Hotel, open to locals, members and hotel guests for a quick bite or crafted cocktail, and if you’re looking for a hotel to stay in, the Clayton is remarkable. There are too many places to eat at to list but I love going to Root Down with friends or brunch at Snooze or Denver Biscuit Company.

Also, it’s definitely worth heading west to the mountains to awe at the beautiful Mountains, nature, and wildlife in Colorado.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story has a lot of chapters, thus I have had many mentors throughout my life. From an early age, my mother encouraged me to chase my dreams and I’m blessed for her continued love and support. In middle school, Ms. Dowling would sit after class and answer all of my writing and grammar questions starting a fire for my love of writing. In college, one of my professors, Andy Gibson, went out of his way to teach and guide me to a successful career as a sports broadcaster for FOX Sports and CBS Sports. In sports broadcasting, Brandon Meier not only gave me my break into television on FOX Sports Southwest and FOX Sports Oklahoma but he mentored me with advice early in my career and to this day. As Oklahoma State University’s first full-time in-house sports reporter for FOX Sports, Coach Gundy, Coach Glass and Coach Littell were encouraging mentors in my career. Jarvis Johnson, player development for the Green Bay Packers, is a supportive business mentor. Currently in Denver, Colorado as the National Marketing Director for VIP Real Estate, I’m thankful for the efforts of VIP Real Estate’s founder and president, Brian Furer.

12 Video Marketing Tips And Tricks For Small Businesses

upcity excerpt:

Be Authentic

Your viewers do not want to feel like they are being “sold to.” They want to be on a journey through your content and feel a connection to your business’s mission and vision. Examples of authenticity are testimonials from existing customers or staff members, or case studies of previous success stories. Having a professional-looking or high-quality video is not always necessary, as long as the purpose and call to action of the video are clear.

“My top video marketing tips for small business owners is to make high-quality, authentic videos and to post consistent video content. With video marketing, the more creative you are featuring and promoting your business the better.” —Allison Gappa, Marketing Specialist, ALLYEXIA

5 Content Creation Tips For Small Business Owners

social media content for small business owners

As a small business owner, your company is your brand. A brand is those first thoughts you think when you hear a person or company’s name. Those are important ones because they often dictate whether the consumer will engage with your brand and convert by purchasing your product or service.

Starting with a brand and social media strategy is critical because you want to have a foundation because it will be the consistent core and essence of everything you do on social media. Building your brand foundation will set you up for success in content creation. You can start with a brand audit and research to see where you currently are, then create brand elements and your brand touchpoints. Then, you will be ready for launch (or pre-launch) on social media.

Now that your brand foundation is in place, let’s dive into content creation tips for small businesses.

1. Brand Photoshoot

A brand photoshoot goes way beyond an updated headshot. It is a creative lifestyle photoshoot that tells your brand story through aesthetically pleasing, high-definition photography and videography. These could be candid shots of you working from your home office or more staged scenes within your store that display your brand message. And don’t forget to get that updated headshot too!

These creative brand photo and video shoots really bring your brand to life. Then, the photos and videos are used across your marketing collateral including social media. Bring a couple different outfits to batch content. From there, you can schedule your social media content calendar with beautiful, high-quality visuals that represent your small business.

2. Social Media Strategy

It’s important to have a social media strategy that outlines your goals, target audience, content plan, platforms you choose to post on and it should all be aligned with your brand message. Go in depth on how you are going to achieve your social media goals by creating, posting, engaging, listening, monitoring and of course, interacting with others. Think about why these goals and strategies will improve your business. Be sure to track and monitor your social media so you know how you actually are reaching your goals which will help you avoid burnout and keep you motivated.

3. Influencer Marketing

Chances are if you’re a local, small business you have influencers within your community. It’s important to choose who represents your brand wisely and it might take some research and searching to find one, few or many (dependent upon your social media strategy plan) influencers within your niche, town or city. But once you do there are plenty of ways to utilize this popular-for-a-reason marketing trend. From social media account takeovers to brand ambassadors to trade or paid campaigns, influencer marketing is no question effective for your business and will make your feeds feel fresh.

4. Content Marketing

Another popular-for-a-reason marketing strategy is content marketing and while it can be done on social media, we tend to think of blogs, articles, webinars and content-rich, valuable resources for this category. Your small business can benefit greatly from content marketing. People don’t want to be sold to; they want to connect with your business and learn or gain something from it.

Content marketing is the process of specific content creation and distribution to a targeted audience. This content is viewed as educational and typically perceived as valuable information. In this type of marketing, the content is a contribution which in turn builds brand awareness and generates leads which turn into sales.

5. Content Themes

There are many apps and tools available to create a content calendar. But what content will be included on that calendar? That’s where content themes come in. Here are a couple of content themes to promote your business.

  • Behind-The-Scenes

  • Client Testimonial

  • Creative Brand Photoshoot Images and Video

  • Giveaway

  • Personal Story

  • Product or Service Promotional Image or Video

  • Meet The Team

  • Quotes

  • Fun Facts

  • Local Events

The list goes on and on! Get creative and remember, always be authentic!

Follow these content creation tips and strategies to up your social media game and grow your small business. at allyexia, we specialize in assisting small businesses in content strategy, creation and growth. as always, feel free to reach out.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

when it comes to branding, getting personal doesn’t have to be complex. your hesitation is valid and fears true as you realize the more authentic you are, the more vulnerable you have to be, which isn’t easy. however, it’s a basic requirement and where we begin as we take a look at building your personal brand.

HOW+TO+BUILD+YOUR+PERSONAL+BRAND+copy+2.jpg

Simply remember, our personal brand is personal. The outcome of building your personal brand is that you develop your own vision, your own voice and your own style. Branding is the art of standing out. It is the practice of expressing yourself. This may require learning new skills. You may just need to sharpen old skills. Whatever the case may be, commit to equipping yourself with all of the awesome tools you need to start publicizing your identity with confidence.

when it comes to branding, getting personal doesn’t have to be complex. your hesitation is valid and fears true as you realize the more authentic you are, the more vulnerable you have to be, which isn’t easy. however, it’s a basic requirement and where we begin as we take a look at building your personal brand.

as a branding agency, allyexia specializes in growiing, developing and rebranding brands. long before the creative hours commence, extensive research is done. while authenticity will be a consistent key to personal branding, we must realize that a brand is alive meaning it needs to evolve in order to grow meaning we have to evolve with it. just like allyexia would do with a brand, have you thought about starting with “researching” yourself? perhaps we start at self-discovery. never said it would be easy, but it will be a lifelong journey you’ll be glad you started unpacking now rather than later.

SELF-DISCOVERY

I think self-discovery looks different for each individual. some journeys will be longer and more grueling than others. some journeys will also be more rewarding than others. the point is, you can’t start branding properly and really grow unless you invest in this step.

who are you? why do i care? what makes your soul come alive? sets your heart on fire? breaks your heart? show me places you don’t take anyone else. tell me your dreams your scared to share with anyone… your scared to share with even yourself.

this is substance. this is what people care about. this is you.

by no means, am i suggesting this so you can break out next month’s content calendar in the next step. this is just for you, me and allyexia. but it’s important because you are stronger than you realize to the point that your self-discovery phase will build the foundation in its entirety for your personal brand. because… authenticity is key. we must know the real you. it’s the only you, we’d love to meet.

BRAND BASICS

you will use creativity, planning skills, analysis, research methods, sales techniques and different strokes of art throughout this process. it almost feels jarring going from one step to the next. switch gears fast, invest in each step and buy into the process and you’ll be fine. better than fine, you’ll be a big, successful goal-getting personal brand.

next up, is what i like to call brand basics. this is where you need to conduct a personal brand audit and create a list of all that needs to be updated. headshot here, profile pic *right specs there. delete that ghost account here, create this new account backed by a surefire strat here. clean up the web as much as you can and get a handle on your brand by making it clear, cohesive and concise.

WEBSITE, SOCIAL MEDIA AND PORTFOLIO CREATION

BEFORE WE DIVE INTO THE CREATION OF A GORGEOUS NEW DESIGN, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL ME:

  • WHAT YOUR VALUES ARE (ALLYEXIA CALLS THEM YOUR POWER WORDS)

  • WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL BRAND MESSAGE

  • WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS

  • WHAT PLATFORMS WILL YOU USE TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS

  • WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL BRAND’S WILDEST ASPIRATIONS

  • NOW HOW DO WE GET THERE

CONTINUALLY, PULL YOURSELF BACK IN TO YOUR KEY OF AUTHENTICITY. FORGOT HOW TO? WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? HOW CAN YOU SHOW ME THAT PASSION ON YOUR PLATFORMS? START THERE. AND. KEEP. GOING.

FROM YOUR PERSONAL BRAND IDENTITY YOU HAVE NOW CREATED, YOU BUILD YOUR NEW WEBSITE, SET UP NEW (OR UPDATE EXISTING) SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS AND CREATE YOUR PORTFOLIO IF APPLICABLE.

PERSONAL BRAND STRATEGY

BASED ON YOUR GOALS, YOU WILL COME UP (OR YOU CAN HIRE ALLYEXIA) a personal brand strategy. this is how it looks. it should set your goals, audience, and designated platforms. then jump into the weeds and tell me how you plan to implement and execute per platform. take it a step further and start content creation, a content calendar, and make a mood/vision board for your social accounts.

this could mean realizing you neeeeeeeeeeed content. story of my life. allyexia has a solution though, we’ll let you in on it. plan and schedule creative photoshoots for your brand and content batch. remember. keep. it. authentic. overwhelmed? keep pushing, it will start to shake itself out and you’ll be glad you invested in this step. invest in yourself, bb.

the next steps will differ depending on your strategy. they could look like:

  • creative photoshoot #1 (ex: at the lake)

  • pre-launch checklist

  • launch website, social media accounts and portfolio

  • follow content calendar

  • creative photoshoot #2 (ex: at the office)

  • content planning

  • content creation

  • content publication

  • monitor

at this point, it’s following your strategy and consistently posting and generating content just as amazing as you are. i get that because it is a personal and not business brand you may feel it isn’t as necessary but it is actually one of the biggest things you can do for your business by establishing yourself. and remember, it doesn’t work if it isn’t authentic so be yourself. trust me. if not me, trust allyexia.

question? we’d love to talk.

Top Real Estate Branding Tips

HOW+TO+BUILD+YOUR+PERSONAL+BRAND+copy.jpg

For an evolving industry and the real estate agent who knows the power of the brand that evolves with it.

it has to make sense, be engaging and memorable EXECUTED FLAWLESSLY WHILE DELIVERING THE RIGHT BRAND MESSAGE. here are some real estate branding tips from the top marketing trends, so you can knock these out and get back to YOUR grind.

  1. Update Your Headshot

It seems so simple, it’s almost trivial, but in actuality, far from it. you wouldn’t believe the impact an updated headshot has across your real estate agent accounts, on the listing packet, as your profile pic, as the featured photo on a local blog or top agent recognition. in fact, having an outdated or worse, no headshot, could now be a determining factor on whether you get top agent recognition. think. it’s a visual medium, first. it is how we are wired and process information and if you feel vain, save your time, because an afternoon spent with a photographer could very much so help you snag your next listing. overall, you want team photos and brand photos that are all professional to build your brand consistently, over-time, with that high-quality content. but the first up and most important is that new headshot, bae.

  2. Step Up Your Copywriting on Descriptions

It’s rather mind blowing, the copy i read on descriptions for luxury listings - really for all listings. this is such a huge opportunity to make the experience of seeing beautiful real estate photography paired alongside a description that takes you on a true tour of the home to seal the first impression deal online. yet, i read weak copy, mistakes galore and no true romancing of the homebuyer. have fun with it. if you think you cAN’T WRITE I HAVE GOOD NEWS FOR YOU. YOU’RE BETTER THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE; IT JUST TAKES TIME AND PRACTICE LIKE ANYTHING ELSE. THE GREAT THING ABOUT WRITING IS THAT IT MIGHT TAKE YOU LONGER UPFRONT BUT AS YOU LEARN, YOU WILL BECOME MUCH QUICKER WHILE STILL PRODUCING HIGH-IMPACTING OUTCOMES THAT BENEFITS YOU IN SO MANY WAYS IN THE LONG RUN.

  3. HAVE A WEBSITE THAT WOWS

IT’S WORTH THE INVESTMENT. HERE AT ALLYEXIA, WE BELIEVE IN GOOD DESIGN. A WEBSITE IS REALLY AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW UP AS YOUR BEST SELF EVERYDAY TO EVERY GENERATION. your website is just another brand touchpoint that needs to be professional and content-rich (def. want awesome idx search) with personal style. it should stand out, in a good way. unless your brand doesn’t stand out, that’s fine but it still better be brilliant.

  4. MAKE SURE YOUR MARKETING COLLATERAL IS ON-POINT

WHAT DO I MEAN MAKE SURE YOUR MARKETING COLLATERAL IS ON-POINT? WELL, YOUR LISTING PACKET AND BUYERS GUIDE AND/OR CONSULTATION NEEDS TO BE UPDATED. FOCUS ON THE DESIGN AND CONTENT. IS THE INFORMATION VALUABLE? IS THE DESIGN SEAMLESS? DOES IT FIT INTO YOUR OVERALL REAL ESTATE AGENT BRAND? I CAN’T STRESS ENOUGH HOW MUCH GOOD DESIGN ON A SIMPLE FLYER FOR SOCIAL MEDIA REALLY DOES MAKE OR BREAK YOU IN THE DIGITAL AGE. YOUR BRAND SHOULD CLICK AT EACH TOUCHPOINT OFFERING A CONSISTENT, COHESIVE, CONCISE AND CREATIVE BRAND MESSAGE. THERE’S NO EXCUSE NOT TO HAVE AMAZING COLLATERAL IN 2021. AS ALWAYS, FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO ALLYEXIA FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPORT IN THIS AREA.

  5. GET CREATIVE

I will say as “unknown” as this time feels in real estate marketing and branding, it’s also an amazing opportunity to write the book. it’s a great time to take some different paths, test out different platforms and listen and grow with your audience and community. this can mean getting out of the box and being creative.

for instance, one of allyexia’s clients is a top real estate team in Tulsa, oklahoma who has been featured and recognized on the cover and in magazines locally and statewide in 2021. now some marketers say print is dead. blah. i love it. and it’s been amazing for my clients. it might mean reaching out or applying for awards or to be featured. if you provide valuable content, pitch a reporter. if you’re good on-camera, go live everyday for a month and watch what happens. attend virtual events and meet likeminded individuals in and out of the industry on LinkedIn. create relationships that mean something because any other networking approach is cheap. create a social media series around one topic you do weekly or monthly. volunteer and give donations as client closing gifts. re-do your logo or email signature. the list goes on and it always will, the point is to get to a place where your creativity is your new fave hustle.

  6. UPGRADE

I PUT THIS IN HERE BECAUSE YOU HAVE SOMETHING (OR SOMEONE JK LOL) YOU NEED TO UPGRADE. YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS AND IT’S TIME TO DO IT. IT COULD BE YOUR LAPTOP, YOUR CAR, YOUR WARDROBE, YOUR MINDSET, YOUR ATTITUDE, YOUR DISCIPLINE, YOUR SELF-TALK, MAN, I DON’T KNOW. BUT, I DO KNOW THAT JESUS TAKIN’ THE WHEEL, YOU CAN DO IT. AND I FEEL CALLED TO TELL YA IT’S TIME, IT’S TIME TO UPGRADE. UPGRADE YOUR BRAND BY TAKING IT ALL NEXT LEVEL OR UPGRADE YOUR SHOES. WHATEVER CAME TO MIND FIRST.
